Review eligible deductions and exemptions under the selected tax regime, including Chapter VI-A where permitted
Compute tax liability, advance tax or self-assessment tax requirements, interest and refund position, where applicable
Submit the return through the income-tax e-filing portal and complete or assist with e-verification
A fixed sequence — each step depends on the one before it.
Collect income, tax-credit, deduction, investment and bank-account information
Establish residential status, income heads, applicable tax regime and eligible ITR form
Reconcile the information with Form 16, Form 26AS, AIS and TIS
Prepare the return and calculate tax payable or refund
Obtain confirmation of the return particulars
File the return electronically and pay any self-assessment tax due
Complete e-verification and retain the acknowledgement
Keep these documents ready so your filing can move smoothly.
Both regimes are available for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) — which one costs less depends on your own income and deductions.
Tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances and the rules applicable for the relevant assessment year.
Statutory dates for FY 2025-26 / AY 2026-27 — confirm against the current filing calendar before relying on them.
ITR-1 may apply where the individual satisfies the form's eligibility conditions. ITR-2 applies to individuals or HUFs with income other than business or professional income who are not eligible for ITR-1, including cases involving capital gains or foreign income.
The new tax regime under section 115BAC is the default regime for individuals, but an eligible taxpayer may exercise the option to use the old regime in accordance with the filing requirements.
The return must be e-verified after submission, or it isn't treated as filed. The filing record and verification status can be checked on the e-filing portal.
Where the statutory conditions are met, a revised return may be filed within the applicable time limit. A rectification request is a separate remedy for a mistake apparent from the record in an eligible processed return or order.
